There are few pinball moments quite as satisfying as launching the perfect skill shot! If you’re not hitting every one, it may be time to return to fundamentals and level up your game.
THE PERFECT LAUNCH!
Well executed ball launches deliver pinballs into targets with precision and repeatability, awarding big points and sometimes advancing important playfield objectives. Hitting a bullseye can require careful alignment of the shooter rod tip with the calibration marks by the shooter lane - but in and of itself this alignment won’t always deliver consistent results. If this is true for you, consider trying a different technique.
Explore Ball Launch Variations
Many players adopt the traditional technique for launching a pinball; pinch the shooter rod knob between the thumb and index finger, retract the plunger to a specific calibration mark on the shooter lane assembly, and release the plunger. This technique is time tested and may work well for you, but it is worth exploring variations.
Traditional Ball Launch
Applying sideways force perpendicular to the path of the shooter rod will pinch the rod against the side of the plunger assembly. This presents a great way to fine tune the launch position of the shooter rod while sighting the tip of the rod by the calibration marks. The ball launch occurs when the rod is released - either by relaxing the thumb or snapping it abruptly off to the side.
Thumb Snap Ball Launch
If you prefer not to use your thumb, fingers can achieve the same result by applying force in any direction (up, down, left or right) so long as the force successfully holds the shooter rod in place. Again, the ball launch occurs by relaxing your fingers or snapping them off the side of the shooter rod.
Finger Snap Ball Launch
A two handed launch is similar to the traditional launch described above. However the use of a second hand provides additional calibration control by allowing the player to brace one hand against the machine for support while the other hand controls the shooter rod.
Two Handed Ball Launch
Another variation is referred to as the “power plunge.” This launch entails smacking the shooter rod with the palm of your hand to launch the ball onto the playfield. It ignores the benefits of the calibration scale that many players find useful, but it can be a powerful ally with older machines whose springs are too weak to deliver the ball up a steeply inclined ramp or playfield.
